STRASSBOURG, FRANCE

2001

Strassbourg sits in the area known as Alsace-Lorraine. It has had a rich history, being sometimes under the control of the Germans, and at others - like now - under the French. It has managed to blend both cultures well. Its greatest hero is probably Gutenberg, who invented his printing press here.
The statue of Gutenberg (above) sits in the square that Diane is standing in front of. The monument recalls the importance of the printing press to the arts and sciences, as well as to political freedom and, interestingly, the ending of the slave trade.
We enjoyed exploring the many narrow streets and wonderful squares of the town. Here you get a glimpse of the Cathedral Church which both of us found to be very moving and spiritually beautiful. (Unfortunately, interior photos did not turn out!) We took this shot while - you guessed it - having something to eat and drink.

Adjacent to the Cathedral is this famous building, known as the Kammerzell. You can see the German influence in its architecture and that of the buildings around it. Strassbourg is a very picturesque city.

Not far away however is the area known as La Petite France - Little France. It is full of charming little buildings that are so typical of France. A canal flows through the town.
The day we arrived, the European Parliament was in session. As a consequence, we could find no hotel accommodations in the town itself. We took a Holiday Inn outside of town and "commuted" by local rail service. But we enjoyed ourselves immensely in this lovely city in a beautiful part of France.
